Hmm, can’t fail to notice that your list is only inclusive of: male architects, the US or Western Europe, and only from the past 100 years. And even with such limiting parameters you managed to omit some of the most influential minds in architecture (i.e. where is Corbusier?). If you are going to attempt to write an article about the “10 Best architects of all time” maybe you should have consulted with at least a few architects before writting this poorly informed slush, that you most probably googled in 10 minutes.

This list of influential architects focuses on global and regional leaders who embrace modern architecture’s unique design while offering the discipline to the world in a unique and aesthetic fashion. The most recognized names in architecture that make up the list are still working and overseeing projects today. The list includes urban planners, humanitarians, and Pritzker Prize winners. Some are leaving a legacy through their professorships as they pass their knowledge to a younger generation while others are moving into interior design work with the craftsmanship of furniture and household wares. Many of the architects listed practice multi-disciplines in the field, but are true to the architecture’s discipline, as their work continues to reflect social, environmental, and functional considerations.

Is it possible to become one of the greatest modern architects of our time if you are only noted for one building? When the building is the most recognizable hotel in Dubai, yes. British architect, Tom Wright is responsible for the Burj Al Arab in Dubai. Acclaimed for its luxurious amenities as a hotel and also one of the most recognizable buildings in modern architecture. Noted with the world’s tallest atrium, and equipped with its own helicopter landing pad and tallest tennis court at the top, Tom Wright definitely deserves to join the list of great modern architects.

I dared to make a list of 40 indisputably famous 21st Century architects who have shaped the iconic and memorable buildings of our generation. Initially, I wanted to make a countdown from 40 to 1, but I conceded to the fact that architecture and architects cannot be ranked – that design has an obvious subjectivity associated with it. So I will instead arrange my list alphabetically, from A to Z and trust that I have captured the outliers of the architecture today. And whilst the very concept of ‘stararchitecture’ is a hot subject in design and architecture circles; let’s put our differences aside and celebrate these men and women – even if it’s just for their ability to stand out.

The work of this Spanish architect has been described as Neofuturist, although sci-fi baroque might be closer to describing it. His buildings often resemble the ribcages of extinct robotic dinosaurs, if such things existed. His projects definitely attracted worldwide attention—and garnered a reputation for massive cost overruns. Nonetheless there’s no denying that Calatrava is one of the most distinctive architects working today, as his best known creation—the Transit Hub for the World Trade Center—attests. Finally open after years of delays and exploding expenditures, the Transit Hub is a vision in white, its interior dominated by a glass occulus allowing daylight to filter into its main hall. As it happens, Calatrava has another building on the WTC, a Greek Orthodox chapel that replaces one destroyed during the 9-11 attacks. It, too, is clad in white while its form is based on famed Hagia Sofia in Istanbul.Santiago Calatrava, The WTC Transit Hub, 2016
